چکیده

Aerosols influence climate by altering the global energy balance via scattering and absorbing solar radiation (direct effects), and by their effect on the reflectance of clouds and occurrence of precipitation (indirect effects). Aerosols also influence biogeochemical cycles, lead to diminished environmental visibility, and harm human health. This thesis focuses on advancing knowledge of critical properties, specifically composition and hygroscopicity, which govern the role of aerosols in climatic and environmental change. The methods used in this work include a combination of instrument development/characterization, ambient and laboratory measurements, and modeling. An instrument was developed to quantify the water-soluble composition of aerosols. The particle-into-liquid sampler (PILS) grows ambient particles into droplets that grow sufficiently large to be collected by inertial impaction. After being collected in vials, the liquid sample can be analyzed with a variety of analytical methods including ion chromatography. Results from characterization tests are presented, which summarize instrument accuracy, precision, size and time resolution, and uncertainties. An instrument model was developed to simulate operation of the PILS; the model considers plumbing transmission efficiencies, droplet growth, mixing effects, and volatilization losses. Model predictions and measurements are compared and are shown to exhibit good agreement. A second instrument, termed the differential aerosol sizing and hygroscopicity spectrometer probe (DASH-SP), was developed to quantify aerosol hygroscopic growth and refractive index. This technique employs size classification of dry aerosol particles, equilibrates the classified particles to multiple relative humidities, and then measures the

The Impact of Aerosol Particle Mixing State on the Hygroscopicity of Sea Spray Aerosol.

Aerosol particles influence global climate by determining cloud droplet number concentrations, brightness, and lifetime. Primary aerosol particles, such as those produced from breaking waves in the ocean, display large particle-particle variability in chemical composition, morphology, and physical phase state, all of which affect the ability of individual particles to accommodate water and grow...

Towards the Determination of Joint Volatility- Hygroscopicity Distributions: Development and Response Characterization for Single-Component Aerosol

This work presents the development and characterization of a thermodenuder for the study and interpretation of aerosol volatility. Thermodenuder measurements are further combined with a Continuous-Flow Streamwise Thermal Gradient CCN Counter (CFSTGC) to obtain the corresponding aerosol hygroscopicity. The thermodenuder response function is characterized with monodisperse aerosol of variable vol...

Hygroscopicity distribution concept for measurement data analysis and modeling of aerosol particle mixing state with regard to hygroscopic growth and CCN activation

This paper presents a general concept and mathematical framework of particle hygroscopicity distribution for the analysis and modeling of aerosol hygroscopic growth and cloud condensation nucleus (CCN) activity. The cumulative distribution function of particle hygroscopicity, H(κ,Dd) is defined as the number fraction of particles with a given dry diameter, Dd, and with an effective hygroscopici...

The white-light humidified optical particle spectrometer (WHOPS) – a novel airborne system to characterize aerosol hygroscopicity

Aerosol particles experience hygroscopic growth at enhanced relative humidity (RH), which leads to changes in their optical properties. We developed the white-light humidified optical particle spectrometer (WHOPS), a new instrument to investigate the particles’ hygroscopic growth. Here we present a detailed technical description and characterization of the WHOPS in laboratory and field experime...

Composition and properties of atmospheric particles in the eastern Atlantic and impacts on gas phase uptake rates

Marine aerosol composition continues to represent a large source of uncertainty in the study of climate and atmospheric chemistry. In addition to their physical size and chemical composition, hygroscopicity plays a significant role, increasing the particles’ surface areas and scattering potential. Simultaneous aerosol measurements were performed on board the RRS Discovery and at the Cape Verde ...
